Gerti Bierenbroodspot

Gerti Bierenbroodspot is a Dutch painter who first began painting as a young child in the studio of her uncle, the famous painter Leo Gestel and went on to complete her studies at the National Academy of Art and the National Museum (Rijksmuseum) Amsterdam. In the 1970's she travelled extensively around the Mediterranean and established a studio in France. Gerti first came to Petra in 1989, returning frequently since then, for as she says, she felt that in Petra she was walking into her own paintings. She has also spent time in Palmyra and Baalbeck, finding particular resonance in the monumental presence in all these cities.

First exhibiting in 1967, she has had a succession of solo exhibitions across Europe and in New York, as well as in Beirut and previously in Amman. Her work, which is found in major collections all over the world, is not restricted to painting alone, but includes sculpture and poetry. In 1990 she held her first show of works from Petra, entitled "Petrascapes" at the Singer Museum in Laren, Netherlands and in 1998 the book Bierenbroodspot Sign of Taurus by Judith Weingarten, was published about her work in Petra, Palmyra and Baalbeck. An exhibition of her Petra works was held in Amman in 1995, in the presence of H.M. Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus and H.M. King Hussein and Queen Noor.
